New to Linux

Just getting interested in Linux as a desktop option and getting a new desktop as well. I have ordered the latest Kubuntu through ShipIt and was wondering what kinds of hardware others are using it on. I (unfortunately) don't have nearly as much time as I would like to devote to tweaking the hardware, so was thinking of just going with a low cost solution something from Dell with pre-installed Ubuntu, or maybe even Zareason.com. Also I am wondering if anyone has test-driven the really cheap offering from Sears ($198 after rebate) I might consider it if it isn't too bad.

Thanks!

I read the same reviews on

I read the same reviews on the $200 desktops and was similarly unimpressed by the actual hardware. I had some Sears gift cards, so it was going to be very little cash out for them. I will look into the corporate excahnge thing. I am not afraid of cracking open a case and adding stuff, I just don't want to spend too much free time building hardware and trying to get things set just so when I could be exploring the wonders of frozen bubbles and K3B :)

New to Linux

About tweaking hardware, I hear ya.... But, have you considered going with pre-owned? I'm currently considering upgrading my daughter's Unbuntu box with a corporate lease return from www.intechraoutlet.com. We're talking Dell 2.4 GHz or better for around 125.00. It's not new, but it should run pretty good and keep a box out of the landfill.

$200 Linux desktop systems are no bargain

Sam -

Here is a link to an article on this subject and really reinforces what I have found to be very true, you get what you pay for. $200 Linux Desktop are no Bargain. We did do a presentation on Ubuntu Linux at our February meeting and several of us run Ubuntu. Hope you can join us for our meetings.
