Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04.2 LTS Multimedia ArtistX 1.0 Released

ArtistX 1.0 was released on Monday (February 7th). It is a fully updated Ubuntu 10.04.2 using the KDE desktop 4.4.5 (Standard - No Plasma). I have checked it with Conky and with nothing running beside Conky, CPU usage sits at 0 to 1 percent. Nice. I downloaded from the link on Distrowatch (http://distrowatch.com), where I first used the .iso link (which failed after 3.4GB downloaded) and then I used the torrent link which worked great (advantage torrent, you get everything including the checksum). The DVD is 3.7 GB in size and can be used as a Live DVD or installed directly on a computer (I did the latter). On my 5 year old Laptop, everything worked out of the box including playing DVDs. Of special note is that it includes the just released LibreOffice 3.3 full office suite! This is from their website at http://www.artistx.org/site3/: After many years of continuous development and nine versions, the ArtistX 1.0 Multimedia Studio on a DVD is finally here. It's an Ubuntu 10.04 based live DVD that turns a common computer into a full multimedia production studio: "ArtistX 1.0 is created with the Remastersys software for live DVDs and includes the 2.6.32 Linux kernel, GNOME 2.30 and KDE 4.5, Compiz Fusion and about 2500 free multimedia software packages, nearly everything that exists for the GNU/Linux operating system organized in the Gnome menu. Main features: based on Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" with all updates (from April 2010), Compiz for 3D desktop effects; most of GNU/Linux multimedia packages and the very easy Ubiquity installer. Problems noted: One thing I don't care for in Artistx is its choice of screen colors. At first look, the carbon/gray is neat, especially with graphics applications, but the defaults makes filling out text windows in the browser almost impossible so the color scheme needs work. When I was doing the Drupal 6 install listed below, I actually used the browser on another computer to perform the tasks of configuration. I played with the Gnome Color Browser in Artistx but it didn't get me the results I was looking for, nor did the color settings in Firefox. Conky installed nicely and starts on login. Very nice. When I checked localhost to see if a webserver was running, no server was reachable. I sort of expected this so I used tasksel to install the LAMP component and it went okay from all indications. Tried to /etc/init.d/apache2 start to get it running, no error said ok but still no localhost webserver. Checked with /etc/init.d/apache2 status which reported that it was not running. Checked the apache 2 error.log and found a message about icecpp: error that would prevent apache from starting. Short story: Apparently, the developers were using Apache with the dww bug tracking and document system and it's remains cause the Apache failure. Steps to resolve: (If not running as root, be sure to preface any command with sudo apt-get –reinstall install ice33-slice mumble-server ln -s /usr/share/Ice-3.3.1/slice/Ice /usr/share/slice/ ln -s /usr/share/Ice-3.3.1/slice/Glacier2 /usr/share/slice/ Installing phpmyadmin web based MySql Administration tool. You need to set the root password for MySql first as it is unset at on the LiveCD copy. You should set the MySql root password as follows: mysqladmin -u root password your-new-password mysqladmin -h root@local-machine-name -u root -p password your-new-password The MySQL database was used at some point in during development for ZoneMinder (ZM), a camera survielance system and the ZM database is present in the MySql database system. Finally, the acid test, see if I can install Drupal 6 in the same manner that I have previously. I added the usual PHP packages to expand the PHP functionalities not in the PHP5 base install and there were some interactions with what was already installed, messages never seen before, and even the Debian Documentation system (DWWW) was updated in the process. While I had to fuss with a couple of packages (installed alternate packages), it worked and Drupal 6 worked out of the box with no errors. I am keeping ArtistX on the laptop as I continue to explore it (ie, see if I can break it :-).
